1. Santiago is an old fisherman who has had no luck in catching any fish. He has not been able to catch a single fish for 84 days. Even though he hasnt caught anything, he never gives up trying to fish. 
2. Manolin is Santiago's apprentice and has been with with Santiago since he was 5. Since Santiago hasnt caught anything in a very long time, Manolins parents force him to go out on a different boat. However, he deeply cares for Santiago so he does not give up and keeps going back and trying to help him. 
3. While Santiago is out fishing he finally gets a Marlin on his hook, But the Marlin is too big to pull up. They engage in a kind of tug a war. Santiago struggles to pull the marlin up to shore and the Marlin struggles to rid himself free of the hook.
